How to shorten a leather belt: easy tutorial

You received a beautiful leather belt for Christmas or your birthday, but unfortunately it’s too long. Sometimes it’s hard to find a belt that fits… It doesn’t matter! Les Bretelles de Léon gives you all the tips you need to shorten your belt yourself, and make it fit like a glove!

Of course, for this tutorial to work, the loop has to be designed to open… otherwise it’s a waste of time…

Step 1: Remove the buckle

Buckle with unstitched cover: On the back of your buckle is a small metal cover. There’s a notch on it to unlock it. Use the tip of a knife as a lever to open the cover. Once the cover is open, all you have to do is remove the buckle from the leather belt.

Buckle secured with rivets: first remove the rivets with a screwdriver, then remove the buckle.

Step 2: Define the length of your belt

The correct belt length is between the start of the buckle and the third hole (the middle hole). Slip your belt around your waist and mark the third hole with a pen. This will give you a mark on the band to be cut.

Step 3: Cutting the belt

Now all you need is your cutter. Using a ruler, cut the excess strip of leather at the mark you made in step 2.

Step 4: Reassemble the buckle

Buckle with unstitched bonnet: Your belt is almost ready. Refit the buckle to the waistband. To do this, simply slide the buckle over the leather strap, then close the cover.

Buckle fixed with rivets: For belts with rivets, you’ll need to take the cut leather strip where the rivet hole is. Use the cut strip of leather (which contains the hole) to define the location of the hole on the leather strip to be shortened. Mark the spot with a pen, then use a hole punch to make the hole. Replace the buckle and screw in place.
